Romans, Counts and rich Tradition
Lienz enjoys a rich and long history. As early as 2000 years ago the Romans built the town of "Aguntum" which was an important trading point on the famous trading route of "Via Julia Augusta". At the "Aguntum" museum you can get an insight into the world of the Romans.
During medieval times Lienz was the seat of the Gorizia counts who cleared the valley and built lots of castles and palaces, some of which, like Bruck Palace above Lienz, are still standing today.
A historical and cultural tour through Lienz is a must. Churches, castles and museums tell the history of the town and make Lienz the cultural treasure trove it is.
Traditions and customs are also kept alive in East Tyrol. The traditional highlight of the summer festivals is the Lienz Old-Town festival during which regional crafts, authentic costumes, traditional dancing and culinary delicacies are presented for you to delight at.
